Jury Duty

Amidst the myriad of credit card offers and paper spam which usually fill our mail box, today the postman delivered something which made me laugh out loud:

Jeremy got summoned for jury duty :-) Under threat of a fine, a jail term or both, he is required to appear on Nov 13th in the Superior Court of California. He has been issued with a juror badge and a parking permit. I suppose if were Americans this would not be a laughing matter at all - but seeing that we are card carrying 'aliens' here, this amused us both tremendously. We'll send them a copy of the afore-mentioned proof of 'alien status' as his get-out-of-jail-free card :-)

Is it only citizens that can be summoned for jury duty. I thought it was anyone with a California Driver's license.

I have had this happened to my sister before she became a naturalized citizen. She simply returned the mailed with the explanation that she isn't a US citizen, and that was it.

This sort of incidents reminds me of how I used to get political ads asking for my vote when I wasn't even an official US citizen!
