How to explain...

Teg's favourite bible story is The Good Samaritan, which she refers to as "the man with owwies". She summarizes the story with key phrases as we read: "man with owwies. hurt. help with band-aid. donkey. kind. Jesus."

But yesterday she was flipping through the kids' bible and came across the story of the crucifixion with a picture of Jesus on the cross: "Look mommy. Ah-one (another one) man with owwies".
"Yes," I replied, "that's Jesus - he also had owwies."
"Band-aid? Help?" she asked.
"No, love - nobody came to help Jesus with his owwies."
(Sad, confused face from my two-year old)
"That's okay, though, because God made him all better and Jesus can help us too."
(silent pause from Teg)
"Owwies."

Oh dear. I have no idea how to explain penal substitution in the language of owwies. Much wisdom is needed.
