Presenting Dr Lea!
We arrived in Davis on August 15th, 2004, so that Jeremy could pursue a PhD.
Today, on December 14th, 2009, Jeremy was awarded a PhD by the University of California, Davis; and is now officially Dr Lea!
We didn't think it would take 5 years. We didn't think we'd have nearly 2 kids during our time here. We had no way of imagining what obstacles and what joys would lie along the path. But we wouldn't do it any differently - and I am so, so proud of him! His thesis received very favorable comments and commendations from his reviewers. Every member of his committee was willing to sign off on his thesis without requiring any edits! I am so thrilled for him that after years of working on his own, he got public praise and recognition!
So here's a video clip of how you get a PhD at UC Davis (the commencement ceremony, which he participated in last year in anticipation of graduation, is VERY loosely connected to whether you actually have the degree). This is what it looks like when you actually get the degree:
Yes, gentle friends. You hand in your title page with all the requisite signatures, you email them the full pdf document, you fill in a bunch of surveys - and then you sit in a little office with an administrator who checks all the boxes, gives you a half-sheet of paper saying "Jeremy Lea has fulfilled all the requirements to be awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy", and then comes outside and rings a little bell - to the polite applause of the secretaries in the office. Done. Doctorate conferred. Teg and I thought we would make things more festive with our own yays and booyahs. I wish we'd had the foresight to bring hats and whistles. Feel free to sound a trumpet or throw confetti on him when you see him next.
Nonetheless, we are delighted, delighted, delighted. Mission accomplished. And might I just add that reading Jeremy's acknowledgments in his dissertation to his parents (for always believing in him), to me (for reminding him to conquer a little bit of the world every day), to Tegwyn (for making him stop to look at buses) and to our unborn son (for waiting until he was done) - quite possibly were the highlight of my year. Such a clever guy - and so wonderfully sweet too.
I love you, baby, and I am SO PROUD OF YOU!!!

VERY exciting and WHAT a Christmas present! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Congratulations!!!! That's so exciting!
Wow, congratulations Dr Lea. Am beaming with pride too :-)
Congrats! I wasn't there for Ian's bell ringing (he had to drive up for a second appointment because he had to make page number changes on his dissertation - are you kidding me!)... but I heard about the finishing bell ringing and clapping. Oh and they let Elizabeth ring the bell too. How fun!
Love seeing Teg ringing the bell!
Of course, the true cause for celebration is that Jeremy gets his doctorate. Congrats to you all!
Oh forgot one thing: At Berkeley, one gets a lollipop with the word "PhinisheD" printed on the wrapper. =)
So now you're a doctor's wife! Great news. And yes, Marius is getting married, to a lovely lady called Annemarie to whom he speaks Afrikaans! She's about his age, has been married before but has no children. We like her a lot. xxx Merry Christmas to all four Leas.
Love this.
