Fun things

This week has been so.... domestic. But I mean that in the good sense of the word. I haven't read anything fascinating, nothing momentous has happened, I haven't had a profound thought... yet the week was full. Here are some of the things it was full of.

Tegwyn helped us to hang the last of our pictures on the wall. "hamma. bang bang. bang bang." Yes yes, I know this wasn't the safest of things to let her play with, but she was just so eager to help...

Teg making sure the last of her melted ice-cream did not go to waste:

Q: Teg, will you show me your teeth?
A:

Playing horsey with mommy:

And 'playing' the cello with mommy:

(Mom, this is for you):

This week we also got cable. It's the first time we've had TV in our married lives and it is a 30 day experiment to see whether we can handle it (The reason we haven't had TV thus far is mostly that we find ourselves to be really weak and watch way, way too much TV and later feel that we have wasted away days and days). We'll see how we do. So far the perks: I can watch So You Think You can Dance in my own house (truly, I am a junkie). The downside: it's just too easy to let Teg watch Mickey Mouse for an hour in the morning while I shower, brush my teeth at a leisurely pace etc... We'll see.

Other firsts from this week are switching photo software AGAIN. Now we're trying picasa. Apparently I can blog pics directly from there. So watch this space for "part b" of this post, compliments of picasa!

I love using Picasa! I don't even use other stuff because it gives me plenty of storage space, and it is free! (For someone who doesn't take a lot of pictures, Picasa suits me just fine.)

We women are very quick to apologize for taking time to take care of ourselves while our kids occupy themselves with other things (including TV). Yes, there are those situations in which kids are left to mind-numbing (or, sometimes, mind-stimulating) hours upon hours of TV watching for selfish reasons on the parent's part. But I'm not talking about negligence here--I'm talking about good, intentional parents who take an engaged approach to parenting including in the activity smorgasbord, TV.

Seems like thoughtful moms like you (and me) either can feel guilty-ish about letting the kids vegg in front of the TV for an hour while we shower, drink our coffee, or (like I'm doing right now) read a blog; or we can own that it is our choice and we're allowing them to vegg--but we end up letting them watch about the same amount either way: what changes is our level of disappointment with ourselves, I think. Conviction is a great thing, and I'm glad for those families who have banned TV, and for those who have decided to thoughtfully integrate TV into their lives. If we're tending to our kids' spiritual, physical, emotional, and social needs, why apologize for using a great technology that HELPS MOMS keep their heads on straight AND that teaches pre-readers how to follow a narrative? Phew. I'm feeling positively evangelical about this. But I could change my mind tomorrow and still feel like I did the best I could for my family during this time in our lives when I let Noah watch Elmo, which he does while thumbing tractor books, and wiggling all over the floor; and while I make coffee, pack Abby's lunch, slather her with sunscreen before camp, find Matthew's other dress sock, grab a shower (!), and even put on earrings so that I feel more put together. I love that Noah is giggling about cookie monster making a disastrous mess or Elmo talking to a fish named Emily.

I fight my sin nature, for sure. I have to examine my motives when I feel like sewing something more than I feel like paying attention to Noah and I keep trying to get him to become distracted by a show. But that is a moment to moment decision to be made, and is something about which I pray for conviction from the holy spirit. And really, I can be as checked-out from Noah's needs at the park as I can when he's watching TV. ok, now it is time to pay attn to bean, who just climbed in my lap!
