3rd grade quote of the day

This week is SON ROCK KIDS CAMP (our church's Vacation Bible Camp), and this year I am group leader to seven 3rd-graders. In my moments of sanity I try and remember how and why I got myself into this (I REALLY don't regard myself as someone who has a gift with children)... but it has, in fact, been a blast. It's a wonderful thing to see how openly enthusiastic 8-year-olds can be about Jesus :-)

I have 5 well-adjusted, co-operative and communicative girls in my group who learn their memory verses, practice complicated handshakes, and share their snacks. And I have 2... let's say eccentric?... boys. I have ZERO experience with 8 year old boys: I only have sisters and was in a single-sex school for all but 3 of my school years. Consequently, I have no way to gauge whether they are 'normal' boys... or whether boys and girls are totally different creatures from each other at this age. I'm going for the latter.

The girls are easy. The boys are much more of a challenge... but I'm loving them. Today's best moment came from the more ADD of my two guys. During snack time, I was enjoying our camp-themed trail mix. we had caramel popcorn, salted pretzels, a few chocolate morsels, nilla wafers, and some yummy, cinnamonny little flakes I hadn't had before. I asked the kids what it was and all 7 of them replied in unison: "Cinnamon Toast Crunch!" They couldn't believe I was so out of the loop. I declared myself a big fan and told my group I'd look for it in the stores.

We went quietly back to munching for a second until one little boy voice helpfully added: "Just so you know... that stuff is only for weekends."

Boys are *completely* different from girls. Especially when they are eight. As a former camp counselor, I sympathize :)

In my house growing up, we were only allowed sugary cereals on weekends. Cinnamon Toast Crunch was my Saturday cereal of choice for many years.
