A delightful moment

While we were in Sacramento yesterday, we decided to stop by one of our favourite little spots there: Oto's Market. Oto's is a little Japanese food specialty store: so Japanese in fact that years ago when we first discovered it, it was called "Oto's Japan Food"... not Japanese food, Japan food. We loved it. And we loved all we could buy there, including the best Sashimi-grade fish we'd ever tasted!

So we headed for Oto's Japan Food (as we still like to call it) in search of ingredients for making sushi. We browsed through the store packed with daikon, japanese eggplant, odd-looking mushrooms, seaweed snacks, mochi balls, towers of noodles with no English on the packages. We made our way past old Japanese couples bent at the waist and deliberating in hushed voices over the odd-looking octopus tentacles at the seafood counter. And as we happened near the sauces aisle - with myriads of little bottles filled with coloured liquids and (again), not a word of English to identify the contents, an Asian couple with a cart full of delicacies walked past us and leaned in to whisper: "Kind of makes you wish you could read Japanese, doesn't it? Don't ask us. We don't understand either."
