My theory on steak knives

We go to a lot of weddings, and consequently - we look through a lot of wedding registries. Many of these contain similar household items: expensive steak knives ($40-50 for 4) being a common request. Now, we are knife snobs. Knives get our attention.

We have a fancy set of kitchen knives (wusthof classic, which we wouldn't trade for anything), but we have a set of $6 IKEA steak knives, which work just fine. So here's my theory: if you need a sturdier knife than an IKEA steak knife to cut your piece of steak - use the extra money to buy a better cut of meat!

I could not agree more!!! I too, cannot believe how EXPENSIVE these brand-name steak knives are!!! After all, we are merely cutting pieces of meat that are either cooked or partially cooked. I'd rather have a very nice, durable set of knives like Wusthof's professional series. (My eyes have more pricey tastes than my budget at this time...) Well said, Bronwyn!

And based on your theory, I bought myself 2 boxes of the Ikea knives (at $2.50 for 6) while with you - which seemed an INCREDIBLE bargain, and am using them for everything, including steak, and I'm not sure I even need a Wusthof knife for paring and chopping! Although they be rather grand in my new kitchen. Definitely, spend the extra money on good quality meat!
