Things that are different...

Just a few things that are different about my time in Aus from my life in the US..

1) It is summer here. Hot, long days. wearing shorts...

2) I have 2 members of my immediate family within minutes....

3) I'm watching TV. Aussie TV is strange: lots of adverts for people to sms in for horoscope and tarot readings etc... also some interesting TV programs, like "Girls of the Playboy Mansion"!?!?

4) Compared to the US conservatism about taking small babies out (the local wisdom is 'keep your babies indoors until 6 weeks...), here there are loads of people with tiny tiny babies out in shopping centers etc.

5) Amazing public health services for Moms: free lines you can call 24/7 with any questions about babies, a weekly clinic in each suburb where a midwife will weigh your baby and answer any questions... all free. After my sister had her baby, she even had a nurse do a couple of home visits during the first 2 weeks to check up on her, answer questions, observe feeding etc. Incredible!

6) Driving on the left hand side of the road. This has taken some getting used to again!

7) Super sun awareness: the Aussies are great at this: you can buy maxi-pump bottles of SPF50, and even little kiddos wear sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats etc.

8) (Sadly) No husband here to share it all with. And having a little one who is growing up so quickly makes these weeks seem all the more significant....
