And then there was Utah...
We're back from our adventure - What a wonderful trip! We drove 3550 miles (5600 kms), took more than 600 photos, visited 7 national parks and counted dozens of shooting stars.
It was all too much to blog in one go - so I'll try and give the bare bones over the space of a couple of blogs. This is entry #1! On July 4th we drove from California through the great span of NOTHING that is Nevada (how DID the pioneers find the heart to keep going???), and ended our evening in Cedar City, Utah - on the outskirts of Zion National Park.
The following morning, in 110F (mid 40s C) weather, we headed into gorgeous Zion, a red canyon lined with lush green from the Virgin River. We opted for river walks and swims to try and escape the heat: try to picture me wallowing like a mini-hippo in a river while gawking at the towering canyon walls on either side! That night, a celestial hairdryer of a hot wind howled through our tent... we drank nearly 3 litres of water that night just to keep from evaporating! But the following mornings brought beautiful views as we explored the canyon. Our photos don't do Zion justice. Like Yosemite, it's the scale of the place that takes your breath away - but here are some pics anyway:
In Kolb canyon, in the north of the park:

Some of the view points required a gentle stroll:

It turns out Jeremy and I share an interest in geology - so we took lots of pictures of cool rocks:
