Mysterious professions

Ever since I have known what a gynaecologist was (or OB-GYN, as they're called here), I have wondered "why would anyone choose that as a profession?" In particular, I've been suspicious of men who specialize in gynaecology, thinking there must be something "strange" with them.

Last week, it finally made sense. In a passing comment, one of my students observed that they were probably the only medical professional that people were generally happy to go and see. Usually, when women go to the gynae, it's for exciting reasons!

Now I'm seeing things in a totally different light: why not choose gynaecology where people share some of their happiest moments in life with you, rather than oncology, or dentistry, or proctology...
