on being THREE
Today is my big boy's birthday, but he has no idea. Jeremy is at a conference in Washington D.C., and we decided it was just too sad to have a birthday while Daddy was away. So next Sunday will be the recognized "bells and whistles" birthday; but today.... today I keep looking at him with love and admiration and a squeezing-of-the-heart joy and thinking "you're three! you're three! and I love you so!"
So here's a snapshot of my big boy at three:
He weighs the same as his big sister. He can count past twenty. He knows all his letters and the sounds they make. He loves things with wheels: anything at all. Even two toothbrushes will be transformed in his imagination to two trains chugging around the bathroom. He loves to play (usually alone, but when he does choose company Teg is his playmate of choice).
He does not like having his picture taken. In fact, he'll be smiling or laughing at something, but as soon as you whip out the camera he does his best to maintain a grouchy, sulky face.... until 5 seconds after you put it away. He is a serious little boy, but he has bursts of laughter and joy throughout the day. I find him humming "joy to the world" under his breath sometimes.
He believes that his lightning mcqueen pajamas make him run faster, and every night as soon as he has his pj's on, he gives us a demonstration of his speed running from one to the next. He came undress himself and (mostly) dress himself. His new skill, which he has been practicing in private for several weeks, is taking off his regular clothes and putting on the dress-up "doggy costume" all by himself. He is sensitive to being teased and doesn't want any help: he dresses up behind closed doors and then warns me: "don't make funny noises when I'm in the costume". Okay, my serious son. There will be no funny (laughing at you) noises.
He loves to pray at meal times, and thank God for everything we have. He loves his baby brother, and occasionally still tries to "help" him move in unnatural ways. He wakes up excited to see his parents and siblings every morning. He loves blueberries and yogurt and oranges and cashew nuts and apples and apples and more apples. And oh he loves his mama and daddy. He is our snuggly boy - willing to drop even the most enticing excavator toy at the opening sentence of "Curious George" being read.
We love our brave, kind, snuggly, chatty, independent, FAST boy! Happy birthday from your sentimental mama, celebrated today in the "privacy" of the blogging world. Next week I'll tell YOU all this face to face :-)

Happy birthday, Callum!!!
Time sure flies, especially for a little one working hard at growing up. You are indeed a sweet boy, and I know that the joys you bring to your mom and dad are simply too precious. I wish you many, many more happy years of Callum-filled joy to come.
