You should call your gran.

This morning I called my Gran. My other-side-of-the-world Granny.

She always makes me feel like mine was the call she had been waiting for all week. She laughs with delight at even the mundanest stories of my domestic little life, and gives me fresh eyes to see the simple joys of this season of my life. She tells me she loves me and that hearing my (interrupting, shouting, loud) children in the background makes her cry with happiness. She says 'enough about me, tell me about you', with in 10 seconds of me asking how she is.

I wish we lived closer. I wish she could see my (interrupting, shouting, loud) children instead of just hearing them on the phone. I wish she could feel and see my burgeoning belly wiggle its third trimester heft instead of just telling her about it. But I'm so, so glad we can still phone and that the joy, the sweetness, the encouragement of having a living, gentle granny can still travel the 10 000 miles in nano-seconds.

I need to pick up the phone more often. For both our sakes.
