Anniversaries

We celebrated 3 (great) years of being married last week by taking off for the mountains... We each read two books (so wonderful to read!), and decided we would also something new.

Cross-country skiing is kind of like ice-skating, down-hill skiing, and shuffling all at the same time. We made the dreadful mistake of trying to do a "quick loop" by ourselves before we took our lesson. What should have been a 40 minute trail turned into 1 3/4 hours of frustration and humiliation as we slipped and slid along the track. We arrived at our lesson exhausted and grouchy, and our kind instructor managed to show us in less than 15 minutes enough tricks to have saved us much pain before!

Things were much improved the second day: we did 14kms along the EASIEST routes among the snow, lakes and trees. What a blessing to live where we do!

Our final day was full of anxiety: we thought we'd lost our camera (we didn't - just left it at the hotel and picked it up again later). We thought we'd lost our way snow-shoeing (we found it). We thought we'd take a "scenic drive" (and found ourselves on a very icy, slippery road). We drove over a large stone in the road and thought we'd taken out the bottom of the car (we didn't: we made it home but think we've dislodged the exhaust a little)... Oh well - such things make for much more interesting stories than merely saying "we spent 3 days in the snow and it was fabulous" :-)
