Courage and Calling
September is a VERY busy month: new staff, students returning (which means welcome week!), staff retreats, leaders training... all this, as well as preparing to go on maternity leave in 6 weeks, makes for busy days.In the midst of this, it has been refreshing to be reading a wonderful book which reminds me that God has only called me to do today what I can do today. (Read it! 'Courage and Calling', by Gordon T. Smith.) I have a tendency to pray less the busier I get - but thanks to many midnight wake-up calls from Pip - there seems to be time at night to pray! What a difference it has made: I feel so "carried", despite the busy-ness.
Here's a quote from the book which I've been mulling over for the past few days:
"Unnatural, frantic, anxious work, work done under pressure of greed or fear or any other inordinate passion, cannot properly speaking be dedicated to God, because God never wills such work directly. He may permit that, through no fault of our own, we may have to work madly and distractedly, due to our sins, and to the sins of the society in which we live. In that case we must tolerate it and make the best of what we cannot avoid. But let us not be blind to the distinction between sound, healthy work and unnatural toil." (Thomas Merton)
Here's to seeking the wisdom to work soundly and healthily - even if there are busy seasons.

I read this book about a year ago, just when I started teaching, and was at a crossroad in my life. I found the book extremely helpful at the time, given that I had just entered a profession that truly requires a calling from God. Great read, and I think I finished it in a couple of days. Highly recommend it to anyone. =)
