Headlines!
I stood in the queue at the grocery store this week and surveyed the last-minute-impulse-buy plethora of candies, DVD's and magazines. There were probably about 16 or 17 magazine titles available. I did a quick tally:
* one headline on hurricanes
* 8 articles on improved sex (granted, these were all on the cover of one leading women's mag)
* 4 pictures of Jennifer Aniston
* 2 of Oprah
* 5 of Demi Moore and Ashton
* 4 of Brittany Spears (a few with baby)
* Angelina Jolie was the winner with 6 pics: the final one bearing the headline: "Does Angelina look pregnant?"
Alongside these were 3 "mini-books": one on home decorating, one of puzzles, and one on "the idiots guide to gambling" (very well titled, I thought).
Not that South Africa fares much better in the quality of its pop culture, but still - what an endictment on our society that the average person in this town probably knows more facts about Brittany Spears than they do about Jesus.
